From: "Owen Hartnett" Subject: MacTechGroup Meeting Wednesday Nov 2 Room 372 Date: Thursday, October 27, 2005 1:50 PM MacTechGrp Meeting Wednesday Nov 2 2005 7-9PM Room 372 Bldg E51 MIT Sloan School Porting and Building Open Source Projects on a Mac The open source community provides the Mac user with a great variety of software, often in areas without commercial equivalents. Some of this software is available as pre-built Mac applications, others are Mac compatible but must be built from source while still others may require a bit of tinkering to run on a Mac. Today's presentation will show how to build an open source project on a Mac as well as how to port it and contribute those changes back to the project. Topics to be discussed include how to obtain the source code, an overview of code management tools used for open source, the GNU Autotools used to configure and build software, the traditional Unix directory tree used for installing software and how this translates to a drag-install application. If time permits, we will also look at installing Ubuntu Linux on a Mac so that the software being ported can be compared to the Linux version. Tom Elwertowki is a member of the open source project QGIS (Quantum Geographic Information System) and works primarily on Mac compatibility issues. ************************ NOTE ROOM INFORMATION ************************ We've been reassigned a new room, 372 (for the winter).
