Software Quality Group Meeting Meetings of the Software Quality Group are held on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at the facilities of Sun Microsystems, Burlington (Driving directions below). MEETING DAY & DATE: Wednesday, May 8, 2002 TIME: 6:00 PM Networking, 6:30 PM Presentation HEADLINE: Defect Tracking and Reporting SPEAKER: Marc Rene, GTECH MORE INFO: John Pustaver, 978-443-4254, pustaver@swquality.com LOCATION: Sun Microsystems, Burlington (Driving directions below) DESCRIPTION: Although Defect Tracking and Reporting is one of the most important responsibilities of a Tester it is considered one of the least glamorous. Software Engineers rely on accurate defect information to help them control rework. Testers rely on accurate defect information so that they can re-test fixes. Managers rely on accurate and complete defect information to understand the Software Engineering and Testing backlogs of the project and to visualize the quality of the system under test. Incomplete defect information often leads to additional rework and can result in misinterpretations of the project^Òs status. This session will discuss defect tracking and reporting in a definitive manner. The presentation will address the following concerns: · Why track defects? · What defect data should be collected? · How defect data can be represented to make it meaningful to: · Software Engineers · Other Testers · Managers This session will focus on the methods for collecting defect data found during dynamic testing as well as the recommended presentation methods that can be used to convey a project^Òs current status to its staff and upper management. This presentation will provide concrete examples of what defect data should be tracked and how this data can be presented to obtain a quick and concise status of a project. In addition, there will be examples of how to present defect data to Project Managers to assist them in identifying problems early enough to implement correction strategies. Other topics included in the presentation are: · Static Testing defect reporting (i.e., Formal Inspections) · Predicting ^ÓLive^Ô date · Learning from defects · Avoiding ^Óbad^Ô fixes Marc René is a Principal Software Engineer for GTECH Corporation.
