Date: Tue, 28 Dec 1999 16:39:13 -0500 From: Gail Kahn Subject: January PUF Meeting Announcement Paradox User's Forum Date and Time: Monday, January 3, 2000, 6:45 PM Meeting Topic: "Distributed Applications using the Palm VII, the Corel Web Server and Paradox" by Dennis Ditto, D. Lawton Associates Description: Corel included Web support in Paradox with version 8.0, and Paradox is distributed with an excellent Web server suitable for production use by many businesses. When the Palm VII was introduced by 3Com this year, with its built-in cellular modem and Web clipping applications, they made the Internet a tool that can be used from anywhere. Can these two tools be combined to make useful business applications? Yes!!! D. Lawton Associates has been excited about this possibility from the start, and Dennis created two useful internal applications to demonstrate the technology. Both applications run on the Palm VII, communicating with Dennis's Web server in Sherborn. The server-based applications were developed in Paradox, communicating with the DLA production Interbase database server in Natick. One application maintains the schedule of where each DLA consultant is during the day, so we can find each other whenever necessary. There are conventional desktop and Web interfaces to this database already, but full query and update functionality is now available from anywhere via the Palm VII. In addition, a query application into the central DLA Rolodex has been developed, so that any of us can get this information from any location. Update functionality will be added to this application shortly, allowing any DLA consultant to update our name and address records from wherever they are. During this presentation, Dennis will describe how the applications work on the Palm VII, and he will demonstrate the Palm emulator which is available from 3Com. He will also explain how Paradox works with the Corel Web Server, and how this software interacts with the Palm VII. Paradox source code and HTML sample files will be provided.
